The Empty Room

Sometimes inspiration doesn't arrive with a grand plan. Sometimes it arrives disguised as a simple class.

Last weekend, I took an online collage workshop. Part of the class involved creating our own handmade art book using a bookbinding process (something that has been on my list of things to attempt to create for years).

There was something magical about it.

Not only were we filling pages with creativity, but we were creating the container itself. Before there could be art, there needed to be a place for the art to live.

As I stitched pages together and held the finished book in my hands, something unexpected happened.

The creative energy didn't stop when the class ended.

It inspired me to clean out a closet at the top of stairs on the second floor of the Kent Emporium.  What had become a storage space slowly transformed into an art supply closet—a home for paper, paint, glue, scissors, magazines, and all the beautiful odds and ends that spark imagination.

And then something shifted...

The closet wasn't the destination. It was the beginning.

As I stood in that newly organized space, I started looking at the rest of the second floor differently. Instead of seeing separate rooms, I began seeing possibility.

I've been wanting to remodel the 2nd floor for the past few years but felt uninspired.  Now suddenly I found myself imagining...

A Creative Incubator...A place where people can come and reconnect with imagination, possibility, intuition, and expression.

The funny thing about inspiration is that it rarely shows us the entire path. It simply offers the next step.

• The handmade book led to the closet.
• The closet led to a vision.

The vision is still unfolding.

And that's when I realized something.

I wasn't stuck with how to remodel the second floor.  I was waiting for the right time for the inspiration to emerge.

How often do we look at unfinished spaces in our lives and assume nothing is happening?

• The unwritten book.
• The business idea.
• The spare room.
• The dream that hasn't fully taken shape.
• The creative project waiting patiently in the wings.

We call these places empty because we can't yet see the final result.

But what if they aren't empty at all?

What if they are gathering energy?

What if they are quietly preparing for what wants to emerge?

An empty room is not a void. It is possibility.

And perhaps the same is true for us. Maybe the spaces that feel unfinished, uncertain, or undefined aren't problems to solve. Maybe they're invitations....

• Invitations to trust the process.
• Invitations to follow curiosity.
• Invitations to create room for something new.
