Throughout this year, I found myself caught in a story. Like an old broken record, I was mentally telling myself... I don't want to be here; I'm just going to be disappointed! Meaning...it seemed that everywhere I went, people and situations disappointed me. I was tired of listening to friends and colleagues old "woe woe is me stories". I was tired of people not taking ownership of their situations and instead playing the victim card. Listening to all of these stories, including my own, was exhausting! This past week as I was packing my suitcase for the last business trip of the year, I decided not to pack the "I don't want to be here; I'm going to be disappointed!" story. After I arrived at the hotel/conference center in Connecticut, I met colleagues for pre-dinner cocktails. Immediately, a colleague started in on an old suitcase story. "Reminder what happened the last time we attended a similar conference? I was so applauded and disappointed by the behavior of Joe (not real name). I admit that I temporarily participated in rehashing the old suitcase story for about 5 minutes and then I stopped the conversation and told my colleague... I'm done with this old suitcase story. Yes, the story is true. We can't change the actions and behavior of other people, but we can choose how we react to it. After that quick 5-minute pivot conversation, the following happened... Authenticity and new possibilities showed up in our conversation. We started to share positive stories of where we came from and who we are becoming (vs old worn-out victim suitcase stories). I learned the following about my colleagues...
By unpacking the old suitcase stories of how we were each disappointed in life, we each made room to start sharing stories of our positive moments in life.
